What an amazing opportunity to meet with author Megan Jean Sovern and chat about her debut novel, The Meaning of Maggie! I was so impressed by the insightful questions that the students asked the author. I am so proud! Our next book club pick is Almost Home by Joan Bauer, which also happens to be a Georgia Book Award Nominee. After reading this one, we will be one book away from being eligible to vote for the Georgia Book Awards. I highly recommend reading another nominee over winter break. Wow! What an interesting discussion about Three Times Lucky! This was one where we all agree that you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. It was sophisticated and troubling but juicy and suspenseful. Quite a read! Our next pick is The Meaning of Maggie by Megan Jean Sovern. What a FUN fourth grade girls book club today! It was our first meeting of the year and it was such a delight! Everyone rated the book either a 9 or a 10 so it was obviously well-liked. When chatting about Rump's character, I was so impressed with the insight shared by each book club member. When we took the Rump quiz, we were all either Rump or Nothing the Donkey. (I myself was Nothing the Donkey.) We had such a good time and I can't wait for the next book club on Monday, October 20th! We voted to read Georgia Book Award Nominee, Three Times Lucky by Sheila Turnage. It is also a 2013 Newbery Award Honor book and has received lots of praise and recognition. I look forward to sharing it with the fourth grade girls book club in October.

We loved chatting about Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick! We had such diverse opinions about the book that it made for an interesting discussion. It really makes you realize that we are exposed to such different experiences that influence how we view the world. We voted on our next book club choice, which is A Tale Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz. We will meet on Monday, May 12th during lunch in the media center. Can't wait!
I was so interested in the diverse comments we received during our discussion of The Secret Tree. The comments and thoughts were varied and thought-provoking. We had a rich discussion about so many wonderful things but one special act that we got to do was write on our own secret message intended for The Secret Tree. We are thankful that our rabbi, Micah Lapidus, will be sharing our "secrets" with the Western Wall during his annual trip to Israel with our 8th grade students. In our discussion, it was also pointed out that this book may remind us of To Kill A Mockingbird when we read that in 7th grade. It may be interesting to go back and reread The Secret Tree in a couple of years to see if and how our opinions may change and why.
Our next book club pick is Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick. This is a story that will surely leave us "wonderstruck" as it weaves a brilliant tale of two different lives set against the backdrop of an enchanting New York City. Not to mention, whenever a librarian plays a key role in a book, you know it will be good! We had an enthusiastic bunch of 25 girls at our discussion about It's Raining Cupcakes. It was fabulous! Of course we indulged in cupcakes as we chatted about the book, which made for a fun treat. Our next book club book is absolutely magical. We will be discussing The Secret Tree by Natalie Standiford. It reminds me of a fourth grade version of To Kill A Mockingbird. I am excited to share it with our fourth grade girls. We will meet on Monday, March 10th in the media center during lunch. Happy Reading!
What a lively discussion we enjoyed after reading Because of Mr. Terupt! I am glad that so many are inspired to read the second book, Mr. Terupt Rises Again by Rob Buyea. Our next book club pick is It's Raining Cupcakes by Lisa Schroeder. It's a winner!
