Because of Mr. Terupt

What a fabulous discussion about Wonder by R.J. Palacio!  Twenty enthusiastic 4th grade girls really enjoyed reading and discussing this book.  Book clubbers had different opinions about the various characters.  However, we all agreed that this book caused us to consider empathy on a deeper level and reflect on how we would want to write our character in this story and what choices we would make.  Our  next book club pick is so exciting!  We will be discussing Because of Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea.  This book has gotten rave reviews and it happens to be a current Georgia Book Award nominee!  I challenge you to read it and make a book trailer that tempts others to want to read it too!  Our next meeting will be on Monday, January 13th during lunch in the media center.  Happy reading!

The First 4th Grade Girls Book Club of 2013-2014!

Welcome back from summer vacation!  We are super excited to welcome the fourth grade girls to what is sure to be a FABULOUS book club year!  Each month, the book club girls will get to pick the book that we read through a voting process.  However, for the first book club meeting, the media center has selected the book, which is also a Georgia Book Award nominee for this year.  Therefore, after reading this book, book club members will have a minimum of two more nominees to read before you are eligible to vote for the Georgia Book Awards in the Spring (go girls!).  So, for our first book club, we will be reading Pie by Sarah Weeks.  Our first meeting will take place on Monday, October 14th during lunch in the LS Media Center.  If you would like to check out the book on a Kindle, please complete this form with your guardian and return it to the media center.  If you would like to check out a hardback copy of the book, please come visit us down in the media center or check it out from your local public library.   As you read, please feel free to post your comments, thoughts, and opinions about the book below.  To read an interesting interview with the author, click her images below:

The Secret Tree by Natalie Standiford

Thank you for a great discussion about The Aviary by Kathleen O'Dell.  Our next pick is The Secret Tree by Natalie Standiford.  As described on Amazon.com, it is "...A sweet story of a tree that's literally filled with secrets.

What is your secret?

Minty's neighborhood is full of mysteries. There's the Witch House, a spooky old farmhouse on the other side of woods from where Minty and her best friend, Paz, live. There's the Man Bat, a seven-foot-tall half man, half bat who is rumored to fly through the woods. And there are the Mean Boys, David and Troy, who torment Minty for no reason, and her boy-crazy older sister, Thea, who acts weirder and weirder.

One day Minty spots a flash in the woods, and when she chases after it, she discovers a new mystery--a Secret Tree, with a hollow trunk that holds the secrets of everyone in the neighborhood. Secrets like:
